I’m sure others will put it far more eloquently than I will,
but as Margo winning the Govan bye-election in 1973 is my first ever political
memory I thought I’d pen a few words.
Sadly I never met her, though I did speak to her on the
phone back in my political days to ask her if she would consider standing for
the SNP in Hamilton. Sadly she turned us down but took the time to listen to a
young and keen nationalist make his case and didn’t dismiss me out of hand.
And from what I know that was one of her endearing
characteristics – she was prepared to listen.
Laterally she fought a battle with Parkinson’s disease and
sadly it has carried her away within sight of the referendum victory she strove
for with every ounce of strength she had.
As we wipe away the tears that many like me are undoubtedly
shedding at the passing of this political giant let us strive even harder to
achieve our nation’s freedom in her memory.
R.I.P. Margo
